I for one would love to see them sitting on many more front porches. ![]() I thought it would be an awesome family experience to carve turnips this Halloween season instead of carving pumpkins. People in Scotland and Ireland began to carve turnips into scary faces to ward off evil spirts. By the mid-1800s, making jack-o'-lanterns was associated with Halloween, specifically, in parts of the British Isles, by which time the practice was also making its way with emigrants from. Later Stingy Jack freed the devil " under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul." After a series of tricks Jack dies and God would not let him into heaven. The Devil kept his promise not to claim Jack's soul and sent him off "with only a burning coal to light his way. It came from an Irish folktale of a man by the name of Stingy Jack. The History Channel states that Jack tricked the devil into turning himself into a coin and would not let him change back. Another common amusement at this season of the year is to make a turnip lantern, and in connection with this, I would warn my young folks that as a first step to do this successfully, they should procure a turnip righteously and honestly first, procure as large a turnip as possible, and then proceed with your pocket knife to scrape out all the substance of the turnip, leaving only the rind. The Jack-O-Lantern name has an interesting story behind it. The American tradition during Halloween of carving pumpkins (Jack-O-Lanterns) was brought to us by Scottish and Irish settlers.
